The difference is whether the credential can expire: a qualification cannot, a registration can.

In Australia it is normally called a qualification check, which is why we use both words.
It confirms a candidate’s qualification directly with the institution that awarded it — the institution attended, the qualification earned, its level, and the dates of study and conferral. It confirms the record rather than relying on a CV or a certificate copy.
It returns the institution name, dates of study, qualification type and field, conferral date, and the name the qualification is held in. It does not include grades, class rank, disciplinary records or transcripts. The focus is on confirming the qualification the candidate claimed matches the institution’s records.
No. This is an employment screening check for employers verifying a candidate’s claim. Having an overseas qualification formally assessed as equivalent to an Australian one, for a visa or skilled migration application, is a different process run by the relevant assessing authority.
There is no lookback restriction. A qualification can be verified regardless of when it was earned. The limits that apply to certain criminal record checks do not apply here.
Most checks complete within 3–5 business days. Delays happen when institutions respond slowly or records are archived. International checks may take longer depending on the institution and the country involved.
